The sleigh bells are ringing again as we get close to Christmas. One would think that, daylight being scarce, our pace would also drop, but the opposite seems to happen, every year. We turn into little busy bees and keep thinking there’s just not enough time. Is that why some people are so put off by Christmas? It’s hard not to be affected by the rhythm around you.
Actually, that’s something that’s been on my mind lately: rhythm. You see, it dawned on me that quite a lot of the photographers I know are also gifted musically. This made me wonder. I really didn’t see a connection between visual giftedness and music, as they seemed quite far apart. But under the surface they are both based on the same thing, rhythm. And we people, we love rhythm!
Have you noticed how repeated things seem pleasing to the eye? Or how we can almost feel the movement of a dancer or a cyclist in a frame? Or how the harmony of colors almost seems like music on paper? Patterns, movement, and colors are the rhythm of photography. Just like notes arranged in a way to produce harmony, elements arranged in a harmonious way in a frame gives us pleasure. Still images come alive in our minds. Something in us longs for rhythm.
I come from a musically gifted family and music has always played a major role in my life. Whereas in drawing I have always stunk pretty bad 😀 From that I drew the conclusion early on that anything to do with visual arts was just not for me. But, to my surprise, photography found me. And, to my greater surprise, I seemed to speak the language of it from the get-go.
What I want to say is this: if you think you are rhythmically challenged, don’t let that be the end of it. I believe we all have rhythm in us, beating like a heartbeat, waiting to be expressed. Just choose an art form – dance, poetry, painting – and try your wings.
I can see that you’re already anxiously waiting to be that busy bee again… Go ahead; I don’t want to keep you. But hey, would you do me a favor? Hum a tune while you go. It’ll make your step that much lighter 🙂
Merry Christmas, everyone! <3
