Art, life and everything

It’s early on Saturday morning. I had forgotten to switch off my alarm from Saturday last week, and it went off at 6.45am. Once I’m awake, I’m awake… there’s nothing to be done. So I figured, why not write something down for my blog, something that’s been on my mind lately. It all started with a discussion I had with a fellow artist. It had to do with the fact that when you’re an artist you have to face the […]

Holy frustration

It’s windy today. I’m sitting at a dock in Eastern Finland listening to the sound of waves crashing into the pier. My hair is flying in the wind. There’s something about standing on the shore facing a brisk wind. It clears your mind. It makes room for new ideas. It gives new direction. These past months of blog silence have been filled with what I call holy frustration. The life of an artist is rarely smooth sailing. It’s highs and […]

Things that complete me

Gosh, who stole February?! That short month just flew by without warning and without me getting a chance to put things down on paper (well, on screen) for my blog. But aren’t we thrilled to be in March?! Spring is just around the corner. A while back, I was watching an online course taught by a photographer called Karen Hutton. She has a truly interesting story and really amazing work. There was one thing that stuck with me. She was […]

Can you feel it?

The other day I was listening to an interview of a French film director Jean-Pierre Jeunet. You know him, the one who directed Amélie and Alien, to mention a few. He was asked which of his films he liked the best. His answer took me by surprise. “It depends on the day,” he said. “Sometimes when I look at my films, all I can see are flaws.” I didn’t see that coming! Here’s a famous film director whose films are […]

The rhythm inside you

The sleigh bells are ringing again as we get close to Christmas. One would think that, daylight being scarce, our pace would also drop, but the opposite seems to happen, every year. We turn into little busy bees and keep thinking there’s just not enough time. Is that why some people are so put off by Christmas? It’s hard not to be affected by the rhythm around you. Actually, that’s something that’s been on my mind lately: rhythm. You see, […]

Risky business

How do you feel about taking risks? Are you a risk taker or risk averse? What do you say when opportunity knocks? Do you go, like, “oh shhh now, can’t you see I’m having a cup of coffee here”? Don’t feel bad if you do. I, too, enjoy my relaxed no-need-to-perform coffee breaks. But there are times when it’s better to let your coffee go cold and answer the knock. This fall I’ve been faced with situations where, as an […]

This thing about autumn

You know how different seasons have different characteristics? Winter is about being cozy in candlelight with something warm to drink. Spring is marked by anticipation: nature is waking up, and we are counting the signs of the beginning of summer. Summer, then, is about relaxing and enjoying the sunny days, playing and having fun. And autumn – what is autumn all about? You might feel differently, but to me autumn has always been about inspiration and excitement. It’s the time […]

Tapahtui kesässä..

(Sorry non-Finnish readers, wanted to post something in my mother tongue for a change..)

To pose or not to pose?

Most of us have our picture taken on a regular basis. Be it a selfie or a portrait taken by a photographer, the question of posing comes into play. Whether to pose openly or to go for a more mysterious look (a bit hard if it’s a selfie :D). Should you look into the camera or off camera? Is it better to smile or to have a serious look on your face? We all want to look good in pictures, […]

No more snapshots!

Springtime has stimulated my brain. My mind’s inquisitiveness is growing like the crocuses in your back yard. I’ve been led to basic questions such as: Why does suffering often make good artists? What makes a good photograph? And: Why does coffee taste so much better in fresh air? While I’m still pondering the “why” questions (let me know if you have the answers to these!), I have some interesting insights to share on the “what” question. At least I hope […]
